Hi Mr S. I loved the story especially the last part when the manager asked him where he would be if he had learnt to read and write. A really unexpected twist in the story with a really funny reply. Thumbs up!
I found the story used too much bombastic speech
Hi Mr S. I found the story very vivid - the author has not failed in providing real characterisation, especially through the accent in the characters' dialogue. It was a casual piece of writing, yet it seemed to fit in such a formal context - 5stars! (:
Hello, Mr Spelmer. It had been quite sometime since I have read a short story and its maybe because of that I felt the true meaning of "engrossment" or that this piece was so engaging and realistic . The story was deeply engaging and forced the readers to think and guess about the outcome of the story while reading. This story really reflected well on how and illiterate man can run a succesful business. If such a man can accomlish this feat, we too, can. It really inspired me and also reminded me of Napoleon's(NOT Animal Farm)motto "Nothing is impossible". Congratulations to W.Somerset Maugham.
The story ends nicely and impactfully. However, the slang in dialogue used by the main character is somewhat difficult to understand.
Hi, Mr S. 'The Verger' is a nice, funny and lighthearted story especially towards the ending. However, I could not understand some of the words in the "verger"'s speech. Maybe that hints that the "verger" does not know how to read and write?
